# n3jlpt How to look up Japanese kanji with an on kun index

When you study Japanese kanji for the N3JLPT test you will need a good reference to help you learn, memorize and use an on - kun index. Basically it is a way to look up Japanese kanji characters, it is a unique system that is unique to Japanese and as a student you have to learn & memorize this system in order to be able to effectively look up Japanese kanji either by the on - onyomi readings or the kun- kun yomi readings, a very important skill to have and one that takes time to master, a bit like kanji itself. The quicker you can learn, memorize and use this index without thinking the easier your kanji study will become

We have put together a video to help you get started. Again it is only a start. The real test is to use a Japanese book with an on-kun index and use it daily to get use to the pattern.



We also recommend the "Kanji in Context reference" book which is a small but very useful book that gives you all the joyo kanji and more classified by on-kun index, form index and stroke order index, plus it has the on and kun for each kanji, clearly and simply marked. Meaning you don't have to search three or four different normal textbooks to find the reading of a kanji, It is a lifesaver!
